Before You Buy: What Actually Matters

Five things worth checking before any smart device earns a spot on your network.

    📡
Protocol SupportWi-Fi, Zigbee, Z-Wave, or Thread — the protocol decides which hubs it'll actually talk to.
    🔓
Local Control OptionDevices that need the cloud to function stop working the moment your internet does.
    🔐
Update & Security Track RecordA brand that's stopped pushing firmware updates is a brand you shouldn't trust with a camera or lock.
    📱
App QualityA great sensor with a laggy, ad-filled app is still a bad everyday experience.
    💸
Subscription RequirementsCheck whether core features sit behind a monthly fee before you commit to the ecosystem.

    Plan Your Setup

Three quick tools for estimating energy savings, checking hub compatibility, and sanity-checking how many devices your Wi-Fi can actually handle.

💡 How Much Could a Smart Plug Save You?

A rough estimate based on eliminating standby/idle hours — actual savings depend on your device's real usage pattern and local electricity rate.

    Common Questions

Quick answers before you buy or set anything up.

Do I need a hub, or can everything just run on Wi-Fi?

You can absolutely start Wi-Fi-only, and plenty of people never add a hub. A hub becomes useful once you want devices to talk to each other (like a sensor triggering a light) or want local control that doesn't depend on the cloud.

What's the actual difference between Zigbee and Z-Wave?

Both are low-power mesh protocols built for smart home devices rather than raw speed. Z-Wave uses a single regulated frequency and tends to have less interference; Zigbee is more widely adopted and usually cheaper, with a bigger device selection.

Is Matter actually worth paying attention to yet?

Yes, increasingly so. Matter is designed to let devices from different brands work with different hubs and voice assistants without proprietary bridges. Support is still uneven across older devices, but new products are adopting it quickly.

Are cheap smart plugs and sensors actually safe to use?

It varies a lot by brand more than price point. The bigger risk isn't the hardware itself, it's whether the manufacturer keeps shipping firmware and security updates. A device that's stopped receiving updates is the real red flag.

Why did my device suddenly stop connecting?

Router firmware updates, a change in Wi-Fi channel, or a hub app update are the most common culprits. Before assuming the device is broken, check whether anything else on your network changed around the same time.
